Happy π Day!

Voted!!!

An LA Times reporter asked how I felt about the elections.

‘Cautiously optimistic,’ I replied, smiling in spite of myself.

We’ll see.

Woe is me. Learning CSS from scratch turned out to be much harder than I’d originally anticipated! I’ve avoided posting messages these past months because the task of honing the style for this page has been daunting.

My goals for this page are to post writing exercises, display photos of neat-o things in Washington, DC, tell of bicycling adventures, share recipes, showcase some necklaces I’ve recently created & just have fun learning.

Wish me luck!

With apologies to Ms. Winehouse, here’s what’s been stuck in my head: an imaginary rendition of ‘Rehab’ as sung by a transvestite Cher impersonator, replete with false vibrato & obligatory vocoder.

I fear my mental stereo, sometimes.

Behold Mikey, our neighborhood Safeway bag boy, in his sweet, retarded glory … eating a sheet of presumably super absorbent paper towel.

The hypnotically slow, circular movements of his jaw bring to mind a towheaded bovine chewing cud, blissfully inattentive to the world at large.

Perchance he’s contemplating Schrödinger’s cat … ?

His tongue, fat and pink, protrudes from the left corner of his mouth as the semi-intact towel remains miraculously affixed to his protruding bottom lip.

I desperately want to avert my eyes, but cannot: I am mesmerised by the plodding cadence of his mandibular calisthenics.

His head finally lolls to the side, eyes drifting up to the ceiling, lost in drooly reverie.

The cashier looks for a moment at the bag boy, then back at me, and without blinking asks, ‘Paper or plastic?’

I hate shopping at Safeway, but today was so worth it.

Today commemorates Quinquatrus, an ancient Roman festival sacred to Minerva, goddess of wisdom & music. It also marks my birthday, which I share with Nº 6.

We started the day with a fifteen-mile bicycle ride on the Capital Crescent Trail & got caught in an unseasonably warm downpour. I quite enjoyed the rain, actually, as it cooled my very flushed face!

To reward our sopping wet selves we stopped by Whole Foods Market & purchased mussels, fresh herbs & mozzarella, along with a baguette, which was only half-drenched from the uncovered ride home in my bicycle basket.

Haphazardly Steamed Mussels

Unceremoniously dump it all in, bring to a simmer, cover & steam for 10 minutes. Stir occasionally.
Serves 2 famished bicyclists.

… Be seeing you!

Hello, world!
